Comparative Effectiveness of Focused Extracorporeal versus Radial Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy for Knee Osteoarthritis-Randomized Controlled Study

Forty-four patients with knee osteoarthritis were randomized to receive focused extracorporeal shockwave therapy (f-ESWT; n=22) or radial extracorporeal shockwave therapy (r-ESWT; n=22). The primary outcome of this trial was to determine changes in pain intensity after 4 and 8 weeks using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Secondary outcomes such as physical function using the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), range of motion, and walking speed using the 6-minute walk test were assessed. Both f-ESWT and r-ESWT groups showed significant improvements over time for pain scores, physical function, range of motion, and walking speed with more improvement in the f-ESWT group.
