Effect of pulsed electromagnetic field therapy in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty: a randomised controlled trial

OE Journal. 2014;2(12):5 Int Orthop. 2014 Feb;38(2):397-40333 patients scheduled for total knee arthroplasty for severe knee osteoarthritis were randomized to receive 60 days of pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy after surgery, or to no additional postoperative PEMF. The purpose was to examine the effect of PEMF on pain, function, and swelling up to 6 months postoperatively. The results indicated that with PEMF, pain was reduced compared to control for up to 6 months after surgery, swelling reduced for up to 2 months after surgery, and function improved for up to 1 month after surgery. Long-term effects (3 year follow-up) of PEMF were also observed for persistent pain and the need for walking aids.
