Sixty-eight patients with chondral injuries medial femoral condyle of the knee and partial irreparable tears of the medial meniscus, who had undergone microfractures and arthroscopic partial menisectomy of the medial meniscus were selected for inclusion. The purpose of the study was to determine whether the addition of pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) to standard rehabilitation following microfracture and arthroscopic partial meniscectomy affected clinical outcome measures at 2 years or at final-follow-up (average 6 years). Participants were randomized to receive an active or sham PEMF device, to be used for 60 days following surgery. Results indicated no significant differences between groups at 2 years, but at final follow-up, the PEMF therapy group was associated with significantly increased Lysholm and IKDC subjective/objective scores compared to the placebo group.
