When examining participants who took psilocybin while undergoing a smoking cessation program, participants who experienced a more mystical experience were most likely to abstain from smoking, while those who did not were more likely to continue use. Larger studies on the use of psilocybin for smoking cessation are needed to confirm these resulys.
Study Summary
Fifteen participants underwent a smoking cessation program that included cognitive-behavioural therapy alongside psilocybin consumption. Patients who remained abstinent at 6-months post treatment (n=12) were compared to participants still smoking (n=3) on their retrospective scores on the Hallucinogen Rating Scale (HRS), Mysticism Scale, States of Consciousness Questionnaire (SOCQ), and ratings of personal meaning, spiritual significance, and well-being at the time of psilocybin use. No difference was found between groups in the intensity of drug effects, but abstainers score significantly higher on the SOCQ, as well as the personal meaning and spiritual significance of the experience.
