Psilocybin can occasion mystical-type experiences having substantial and sustained personal meaning and spiritual significance

Under supportive, comfortable conditions, psilocybin facilitated experiences that were similar to spontaneously occurring mystical experiences. These experiences were spiritually significant to subjects and showed positive attitude changes that were also rated by friends and family. Some subjects experienced anxiety during the experiment. The study is limited by the regular participation in religious and spiritual activities among subjects as these interests may have increased the likelihood of psilocybin use being interpreted as a substantial spiritual experience.

Thirty-six healthy, hallucinogen-naive subjects underwent a double-blind, randomized controlled trial to test the acute and long-term psychological effects of a high dose of psilocybin under comfortable, supportive conditions. Measures assessed include vitals, drug effects, and mystical experiences. The two groups of subjects completed two sessions two months apart and randomly received either psilocybin or methylphenidate on the first session and the second drug afterwards. Acute effects of psilocybin included subjective experiences, anxiety and increased mystical experiences. Subjects who reported a high personal meaning showed long-term positive changes in attitudes and behaviour.
