Platelet-rich plasma has better mid-term clinical results than traditional steroid injection for plantar fasciitis: A systematic review and meta-analysis

The results of this meta-analysis revealed significantly greater pain relief with PRP injections vs. steroid injections at 6-18 months follow up, as well as greater foot/ankle function at 12 months, in patients with plantar fasciitis. This study was limited by the short follow up time-points, high heterogeneity between studies in steroid type and dosage, and the small sample sizes of each included study. Larger, long-term studies are required to confirm the efficacy of PRP for plantar fasciitis.
Study Summary
653 patients with plantar fasciitis from 12 randomized controlled trials were included in this meta-analysis comparing platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections and steroid injections. The pooled outcomes of interest included pain on a Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) score. Results revealed significantly better pain relief in the PRP group at 6-18 months follow up, as well as favourable pooled AOFAS scores at 1 year follow up.
