Clinical Effects of Platelet-Rich Plasma and Hyaluronic Acid as an Additional Therapy for Talar Osteochondral Lesions Treated with Microfracture Surgery: A Prospective Randomized Clinical Trial

40 patients undergoing micro-fracture surgery for osteochondral lesions (OCLs) of the talus were randomized to 1 of 3 injection therapy groups: the platelet-rich plasma (PRP) group, hyaluronic acid (HA) group, or control group, who received a saline injection. The purpose of the study was to observe and compare the effects of PRP and HA on patient pain and recovery. Outcomes included the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) scores and visual analogue scale (VAS) scores, to measure ankle function and pain. Both PRP and HA injection therapies were found to significantly reduce pain and aid recovery of the ankle joint, with PRP results being significantly better than HA.
