Preliminary results of integrated therapy for patients with knee osteoarthritis
Arthritis Rheum. 2005 Dec 15;53(6):812-20
140 patients with moderate, bilateral knee osteoarthritis were randomized to one of four groups: isokinetic muscle strengthening exercises, isokinetic muscle strengthening exercises plus therapeutic ultrasound, isokinetic muscle strengthening exercises plus therapeutic ultrasound and intraarticular hyaluronan injection, or a control group. The purpose was to compare groups in terms of pain, function, and muscle strength after the completion of the respective 8 week treatment programs, as well as at 1 year follow-up. The greatest effects in all outcome measures were observed within the group who received isokinetic muscle strengthening exercises plus therapeutic ultrasound and intraarticular hyaluronan injection.
