The Effect of Protein and Carbohydrate Supplementation on Strength Training Outcome of Rehabilitation in ACL Patients

J Orthop Res. 2006 Nov;24(11):2114-23

30 patients with an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury were included in this study, exploring the effectiveness of nutrient supplementation in improving hypertrophy and strength of the quadriceps muscle during rehabilitation. Patients were randomized to take protein and carbohydrate (PC), Isocaloric-Carbohydrate (IC), or Placebo (PL) after each of the 36 assigned training sessions. Over 12 weeks, the PC group demonstrated significantly greater hypertrophy and peak torque of the quadriceps muscle compared to the other groups.
