Effects of propofol versus sevoflurane on surgical field visibility during arthroscopic rotator cuff repair: a randomized trial.

130 patients undergoing arthroscopic rotator cuff repair for rotator cuff tears were randomized to receive either propofol-based anesthesia (n=65) or sevoflurane-based anesthesia (n=65). Outcomes of interest included intraoperative blood loss, breathing recovery time, extubation time, Boezaart score, heart rate (HR), operative time, increased pressure irrigation duration, rocuronium dose, the incidence of remifentanil use, remifentanil consumption, and the incidence of adverse events. Spontaneous respiration recovery time was significantly lower in the sevoflurane group. Similarly, total remifentanil and rocuronium consumption and number of patients requiring remifentanil infusion were significantly lower in the sevoflurane group. Both sevoflurane and propofol-based anesthesia provide clear surgical fields but the sevoflurane group requires fewer opioids and neuromuscular blockades following surgery with easier administration.
