Prophylactic doxazosin reduces urinary retention and promotes recovery after total joint arthroplasty: A randomized controlled trial.
Front Pharmacol . 2023 Jan 9;13:1016203.One hundred and seventy male patients undergoing total joint arthroplasty (hip or knee) were randomized to receive either doxazosin (n=85) or placebo (n=85). The primary outcome of interest was the incidence of postoperative urinary retention (POUR). Secondary outcomes included hospital length of stay, daily ambulation distance, pain on a Visual Analog Scale (VAS), opioid consumption, blood pressure, c-reactive protein levels, and complication rates. Patients were followed until discharge. The incidence of POUR, length of stay, and ambulation on day one were significantly better in the doxazosin group. All other outcomes were similar between both groups.
