Excess Opioid Disposal Following Orthopaedic Surgery: A Randomized Clinical Trial

One hundred patients undergoing foot and ankle orthopedic surgery were randomized to either the drug deactivation pouch with instructions (n=50) or standard instructions for opioid disposal (n=50). Outcomes of interest were the number of opioids left over, the incidence of opioid disposal, and disposal location. No significant differences were reported between the two groups in regard to the number of leftover/unused opioids. However, significantly more patients disposed of their opioids appropriately and at the specified locations within the instructions, in the drug deactivation pouch group.
