Progressive muscle relaxation technique in hip fracture patients .
A randomized controlled trial to evaluate the progressive muscle relaxation technique in hip fracture patients.
Sci Rep. 2024 01-Jun;():. 10.1038/s41598-024-64516-4One hundred patients with hip fractures were randomized to receive progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) (n=50) or standard care (n=50). The primary outcome of interest was post-operative pain. Secondary outcomes included sleep quality and anxiety. Outcomes were assessed before the intervention and four days after surgery, following three nightly sessions of PMR. Overall, the study revealed significant reductions in post-operative pain (p<0.001), improvements in sleep quality (p<0.001), and reductions in anxiety (p<0.001) in the PMR group compared to the control group. These findings suggest that PMR is an effective, non-pharmacological method to enhance recovery outcomes in hip fracture patients.
