Procedural Sedation with Propofol for Painful Orthopaedic Manipulation in the Emergency Department Expedites Patient Management Compared with a Midazolam/Ketamine Regimen

OE Journal. 2013;1(11):144 J Bone and Joint Surg Am; 2011; 93: 2255-2252Sixty adults with orthopaedic injuries requiring painful manipulation were randomized to receive either propofol or midazolam/ketamine. Results indicated that the average recovery time and total sedation time were significantly shorter in patients who received propofol in comparison to those who received midazolam/ketamine. Patients in the propofol group had higher rates of adverse events; however, all adverse events were mild in nature and resolved spontaneously.
