The Utilization of Preoperative Steroids Safely Decreases the Risk of Postoperative Delirium in Geriatric Patients After Hip Fracture Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

J Orthop Trauma . 2024 May 1;38(5):e182-e190.

Four randomized controlled trials, including 416 patients with hip fractures, were analyzed in this systematic review and meta-analysis, comparing preoperative steroid administration to control treatments. Outcomes of interest included the incidence of postoperative delirium, postoperative all-cause infection, and hyperglycemia. The pooled results demonstrated a significant reduction in postoperative delirium in the steroid group compared to the control group, with no significant increase in infection or hyperglycemia. The findings suggest that preoperative steroids effectively reduce the risk of postoperative delirium without increasing the risk of complications in elderly hip fracture patients.
