Preoperative Opioid Education has No Effect on Opioid Use in Patients Undergoing Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair: A Prospective, Randomized Clinical Trial

One hundred and forty four patients undergoing arthroscopic rotator cuff were randomized to receive a preoperative educational video detailing appropriate postoperative opioid use (n=72) and a control group (n=72). The primary outcome was the total amount of narcotics consumed in the first week following surgery. Secondary outcomes of interest included opioid prescription refills, patient satisfaction and pain scores. There was no difference noted in total opioid consumption or number of opioid refills requested. Patient satisfaction was similar between groups. No differences in pain scores were noted with the exception of postoperative day 4, where the video group had significantly higher pain scores.
