Preoperative footbaths reduce bacterial colonization of the foot

OE Journal. 2013;1(1):12 Foot Ankle Int. 2009 Sep;30(9):860-4.44 patients (50 feet) undergoing elective planned surgical procedures on their feet were randomized to receive a preoperative bath with chlorhexidine gluconate in combination with povidoneiodine treatment or povidoneiodine treatment alone. This study assessed the efficacy of a preoperative foot bath in comparison to a control group. The results from this study indicated that the preoperative bath produced a reduction in bacterial colonization in intra-operative and post-operative cultures.
