Impact of preoperative continuous femoral blockades on morphine consumption and morphine side effects in hip-fracture patients: A randomized, placebo-controlled study

60 patients presenting to the emergency department with a hip fracture were randomized to a preoperative continuous femoral nerve block (cFNB) or preoperative single-shot femoral nerve block (ssFNB). The purpose of this study was to compare pain, morphine consumption, and morphine-related side effects in this patient population awaiting surgery. The results demonstrated significant reductions in pain scores following initial bolus in both groups, though no significant differences were noted between groups at any perioperative time point. Morphine consumption also did not significantly differ overall between groups. The cFNB group demonstrated a lower incidence of nausea compared to the ssFNB group.
