Preoperative 3D-planning improves accuracy of the acetabular cup placement in THA .
Comparison of three-dimensional planning-assisted and conventional acetabular cup positioning in total hip arthroplasty – a randomized controlled trial
J Bone Joint Surg Am. 2016 Jan 20;98(2):108-1656 patients scheduled for total hip arthroplasty were randomized to one of two groups. One group underwent preoperative 3D computed tomography (CT) planning with intraoperative referencing (3D Planning-Assisted group) for placement of the acetabular cup while the other group underwent freehand placement of the cup (Freehand group). Cup anteversion and abduction angles were measured postoperatively. Results demonstrated a significantly higher percentage of acetabular cups placed within the Lewinnek and Callanan safe zones in the 3D Planning-Assisted group compared to the Freehand group while operative time was similar between groups.
