Efficacy of Preemptive Analgesia on Tourniquet and Postoperative Pain Relief in Open Carpal Tunnel Release: A Prospective Randomized Control Trial.

44 patients undergoing carpal tunnel release for carpal tunnel syndrome were randomized to receive either preemptive analgesia (gabapentin, celecoxib, & acetaminophen; n=22) or placebo (n=22). Outcomes of interest included tourniquet pain and surgical site pain on a Visual Analog Scale (VAS), and acetaminophen consumption. VAS pain at the surgical site was significantly lower in the preemptive analgesia group from 1-18 hours but was comparable between the two groups at 24 hours. Median tourniquet pain scores, immediately after surgery were significantly lower in the preemptive analgesia group compared to placebo. Median acetaminophen consumption was also significantly lower in the preemptive analgesia group at 48 hours but similar when compared to the placebo at 24 hours.
