Pre-operative interventions (non-surgical and non-pharmacological) for patients with hip or knee osteoarthritis awaiting joint replacement surgery--a systematic review and meta-analysis
Osteoarthritis Cartilage. 2011 Dec;19(12):1381-95. doi: 10.1016/j.joca.2011.09.001. Epub 2011 Sep 1023 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving 1461 patients were identified to determine whether preoperative interventions for hip and knee osteoarthritis (OA) would provide any benefit before and after joint replacement. The pooled results, albeit low to moderate evidence, indicated that preoperative interventions - particularly exercise - reduced pain in patients with hip and knee OA before prior to joint replacement.
