Potential Use of Ayahuasca in Grief Therapy

Ayahuasca, when compared to peer support groups, resulted in a lower level of grief in the Present Feelings Scale of the TRIG. There were also some significant differences in qualitative responses regarding experiences in the grieving process. Ayahuasca may be beneficial to some people in the grieving process, but further studies with larger sample sized and randomized designs are needed.

In this cross-sectional comparative study, surveys were given to 30 participants taking ayahuasca during the grieving process of losing a loved one, and 30 participants attending peer support groups. Participants answered a General Characteristics Bereavement Questionnaire, the Texas Revised Inventory of Grief (TRIG, and the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire (AAQ). Participants taking ayahuasca showed a lower level of grief in the Present Feelings subscale of the TRIG.
