The Role of Knee Position in Blood Loss and Enhancement of Recovery after Total Knee Arthroplasty

One hundred and thirty four patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty were randomized to have their operative limb in flexion (n=62) or extension (n=62) postoperatively. The outcomes of interest included postoperative blood loss, functional outcomes, opioid consumption and pain. The postoperative transfusion rate and overall blood loss was similar between groups but the flexion group demonstrated lower levels of hidden blood loss. The flexion group also demonstrated significantly lower opioid consumption postoperatively. No differences in range of motion or Hospital for Special Surgery scores were found at final follow-up. No differences in adverse events or reoperations were noted.
