Postoperative Pain in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Pain Physician. 2022 01-Jul;():.Thirty-two patients aged 9-18 years diagnosed with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis were randomized to receive either posterior spinal instrumentation (PI; n=17) or vertebral body tethering surgery (VBT; n=15). The primary outcome of this trial was pain intensity at 1, 4, 8, 12, 24, and 48 hours, and 3 weeks, postoperatively. Morphine consumption, patient satisfaction, bleeding, and length of stay were also measured. Significant differences were reported at all time points except for 3 weeks for pain and morphine consumption, with favourable scores in the posterior instrumentation group. Bleeding was significantly greater in the PI group, length of ICU and hospital stays were lower in the PI group when compared to VBT.
