Platelet-rich plasma injection for acute Achilles tendon rupture : two-year follow-up of the PATH-2 randomized, placebo-controlled, superiority trial
OrthoEvidence Journal (OE Journal) - ACE Report
OE Journal. 2023;11(1):12 Bone Joint J. 2022 Nov;104-B(11):1256-1265.What this means for my practice?
The results of this study suggest that platelet-rich plasma does not provide any improvement in patient-reported function or quality of life 2 years post-treatment for patients with acute Achilles tendon ruptures. Therefore, the benefit of PRP for Achilles tendon rupture appears to be minimal. This study was limited by the differences in whole blood volume taken and the lack of measurement of the heel-rise endurance test (HRET), which was the primary outcome of the primary study.
Study Summary
182/230 patients from the PATH-2 trial responded to this 2-year follow-up study of the PATH-2 trial comparing platelet-rich plasma (PRP; n=88/114) and placebo (92/116). The outcomes of interest included the Achilles Tendon Rupture Score (ATRS), the Patient-Specific Functional Scale (PSFS), and the Short-Form 12 (SF-12) mental and physical component quality of life scores. The results of this study found no differences between the two groups, suggesting limited-to-no-benefit of PRP for the improvement of function and quality of life in patients with acute Achilles tendon ruptures.
