The Role of Platelet Rich Plasma in Vertebrogenic and Discogenic Pain: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Curr Pain Headache Rep. 2024 01-Aug;():. 10.1007/s11916-024-01274-y

This systematic review and meta-analysis included 10 studies examining the role of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in treating vertebrogenic and discogenic pain. The studies involved PRP interventions delivered intradiscally, epidurally, or via other targeted injections and compared these to standard care, placebo, or corticosteroid treatments. The primary outcomes assessed were pain reduction (via VAS/NRS) and functional improvement (via ODI). The meta-analysis found no statistically significant differences in pain scores at 1, 3, or 6 months and mixed trends in functional improvement. Overall, PRP was found to be safe but offered limited advantages over comparators. The study concluded that while PRP shows potential for musculoskeletal pain management, more robust, long-term trials are needed to establish efficacy
