Effectiveness of Pistacia atlantica on older adult knee osteoarthritis, a randomized triple blind clinical trial.

Sixty elderly patients diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis of at least 3 years duration were randomized to receive 8 weeks of Pistacia atlantica (P. atlantica) gum ointment treatment (n=30) or placebo ointment (n=30) for the improvement of symptoms. The outcomes of interest included the pain, stiffness and function sub-scales of the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC). Outcomes were assessed after the completion of the 8 week intervention period. Results revealed significantly favourable pain, stiffness and function scores in the treatment group compared to the placebo group.
