PHYSICAL THERAPY & REHAB
Pilates Training vs General Exercise for Fall Prevention in Healthy Individuals >55 Years Old .

Physical exercise and prevention of falls. Effects of a Pilates training method compared with a general physical activity program: A randomized controlled trial

Medicine (Baltimore). 2021 Apr 2;100(13): e25289.

Forty-six healthy elderly patients were randomized to receive 13 weeks of either Pilates training (n=23) or general exercise training (n=23) for the improvement of physical ability and reduction of fall risk. Outcomes of interest included the hand grip test for strength, the Berg Balance Scale, and posturography analyses via the Romberg test with the eyes open (length of sway path; ellipse surface area). Outcomes were assessed upon completion of the 13 week training program. Results revealed significantly favourable hand grip test scores, Berg Balance test scores, and ellipse surface area in the Pilates training group compared to the general exercise group (p<0.05 for all). No significant difference was observed between groups in the length of sway path (p>0.05).
