Physiotherapy Improves Pain and Function in Lumbar Prolapsed Intervertebral Disc Patients
A systematic review and meta-analysis on the efficacy of physiotherapy intervention in management of lumbar prolapsed intervertebral disc
Int J Health Sci (Qassim). 2021 Mar-Apr; 15(2): 49–57.Eleven studies (5 included in quantitative analysis) containing a total of 595 patients were included in this meta-analysis comparing physiotherapy interventions (including electrotherapy, manual therapy, laser therapy, manipulation, exercise, and traction) to control for the improvement of pain, function and neural mobility. The pooled outcomes of interest included pain on a visual analogue scale (VAS), disability on the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and the straight leg raise test. Pooled results revealed statistically significantly favourable VAS pain scores and ODI scores in the physiotherapy group compared to the control group (p=0.001; p<0.0001, respectively). However, no statistically significant differences in pooled straight leg raise was observed between the two groups (p=0.07).
