Phototherapy on Management of Creatine Kinase Activity in General Versus Localized Exercise: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Clin J Sport Med. 2020 May;30(3):267-274. doi: 10.1097/JSM.0000000000000606.

Fourteen studies with a total of 338 patients were included in the meta-analysis comparing phototherapy treatment before or after exercise and a control or placebo condition in healthy subjects for managing creatine kinase (CK) levels. Phototherapy treatment included low-level laser therapy (LLLT) and light-emitting diode therapy (LEDT). The primary outcome was measuring CK activity. Sub-group analyses were conducted for the primary outcome comparing exercise protocols of localized versus generalized exercise. The results demonstrated that phototherapy treatment was significantly superior in managing CK levels overall. In addition, the pooled data revealed that phototherapy treatment had a greater effect in the localized exercises group when compared to the generalized exercise group.
