Effectiveness of photobiomodulation therapy in the treatment of patients with an ankle sprain: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Six randomized controlled trials including 598 patients with ankle sprain were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis comparing photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) vs. standard treatments. Pooled outcomes of interest included pain, oedema, and function. The meta-analysis revealed a significant overall effect of PBMT on pain with a high effect size but non-significant effects on oedema and function. PBMT showed a high effect size with a moderate level of evidence on pain intensity, suggesting that PBMT is quite effective for pain management in ankle sprains, though further research is needed for its impact on oedema and function.
