Effects of phantom exercises on pain, mobility, and quality of life among lower limb amputees; a randomized controlled trial

Twenty four patients with unilateral lower limb amputations who were undergoing rehabilitation were randomized to received standard rehabilitation consisting of mirror therapy and physical therapy (n=12) or standard rehabilitation and phantom limb exercises (n=12). The primary outcomes of interest were pain measured with a visual analogue scale (VAS), quality of life measured through the 36-item Short Form Survey (SF-36) and mobility. The phantom limb exercise group demonstrated decrease pain scores at 4 weeks and significantly better scores on the bodily pain subscore of the SF-36 compared to the control group. No differences in the other SF-36 subscores were noted. No differences in mobility potential were noted.
