Pericapsular Nerve Group (PENG) Block versus Supra-Inguinal Fascia Iliaca Compartment Block for Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Fifty-eight patients undergoing a total hip arthroplasty were randomized to receive a pericapsular nerve blockade (n=29) or a supra-inguinal fascia iliaca compartment block (n=29). The primary outcomes of interest were Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) pain scores at rest and during movement. Secondary outcomes of interest included opioid consumption, quadriceps muscle strength, intra-operative anesthesia-relevant data (fentanyl dose; remifentanil dose; blood loss; anesthesia time) and post-operative hospitalization outcomes (post-anesthesia care unit stay; nausea; urinary retention; time to ambulation; length of stay; patient satisfaction). Results revealed significantly lower NRS pain scores at rest at 6 and 24 hours post-operation in the pericapsular block group. Otherwise, no differences were observed between the two groups.
