Comparison of Periarticular Multimodal Drug Injection and Femoral Nerve Block for Postoperative Pain Management in Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
J Arthroplasty. 2015 Jul;30(7):1281-6.10 studies were included in this meta-analysis comparing periarticular multimodal drug injection (PMDI) and femoral nerve block (FNB) for postoperative analgesia following total knee arthroplasty. The goal of this study was to determine if PMDI was a safe and effective alternative to FNB after a total knee arthroplasty. Despite significantly lower pain with FNB at 12 hours after surgery, there were no significant differences in analgesic outcomes (pain at rest, pain with activity, opioid consumption) between methods at 24-48 hours postoperatively.
