Effectiveness of Periarticular Injection After Bipolar Hemiarthroplasty for Displaced Femoral Neck Fracture in Elderly Patients: A Double Blinded Randomized, Controlled Study

Sixty patients with a displaced femoral neck fracture undergoing bipolar hemiarthroplasty were randomized to receive a periarticular injection (PAI) (n=30) or sham injection (n=30) during surgery. Outcomes of interest were postoperative pain scores measured by the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and postoperative morphine consumption. The PAI group demonstrated significantly lower VAS pain scores at 8, 16, 24 and 60 hours postoperatively. The PAI group also demonstrated significantly reduced morphine consumption at 8h postoperatively.
