A randomised study of peri-prosthetic bone density after cemented versus trabecular fixation of a polyethylene acetabular component

55 patients requiring fixation of the acetabular component were randomized to receive either a cemented polyethylene or a monobloc trabecular metal component with a polyethylene articular surface. The results of the 2-year study indicated that there was no significant difference in regards to pain and function between the two groups at 2 year follow-up. Additionally, it was found that the there was a general reduction in bone mineral density (BMD) in the trabecular group in comparison to the cemented group, which showed relatively little BMD reduction.
