Comparison of Percutaneous Vertebroplasty and Balloon Kyphoplasty for the Treatment of Single Level Vertebral Compression Fractures: A Meta-analysis of the Literature

Eight studies were selected for inclusion in this meta-analysis comparing percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) and percutaneous balloon kyphoplasty (PKP) for treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (VCFs). This study looked to determine the better method of treatment in both the short-term and long-term. Results found that both methods were safe and effective procedures. PKP demonstrated better results for the injected cement volume, short-term pain relief, and improvement of short- and long-term kyphotic angle. In contrast, PVP was associated with a shorter operative time and reduced cost.
