Pulsed electromagnetic fields after rotator cuff repair: a randomized, controlled study
Orthopedics. 2015 Mar 1;38(3):e223-866 patients with rotator cuff tears undergoing arthroscopic repair were randomized to receive pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy or placebo for 6 weeks following surgery. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of PEMF therapy on clinical and functional outcomes after surgery. Short-term follow-up was performed at 3 months, and final follow-up was performed at an average of 26 months. While both groups demonstrated significant improvement in outcomes scores (UCLA, Constant, VAS) from baseline to 3 months, scores were significantly higher in the PEMF group compared to the placebo group. Additionally, the PEMF group displayed a lower incidence of analgesic use in the first 6 weeks after surgery, and exhibited earlier return to work and daily activities. Nonetheless, outcomes at 2 years were similar between groups.
