Sense of coherence: effect on adherence and response to resistance training in older people with hip fracture history
OrthoEvidence Journal (OE Journal) - ACE Report
OE Journal. 2014;2(9):14 J Aging Phys Act. 2014 Jan;22(1):138-45. doi: 10.1123/japa.2012-0229. Epub 2013 Mar 2645 patients with a history of hip fracture were randomized to undergo either a 12-week individualized, progressive resistance training program or no intervention at all. The purpose of this secondary analysis was to examine the effect a patients sense of coherence (SOC) has on functional outcome upon completion of the intervention. Results indicated that SOC at baseline was significantly associated with adherence of the training regimen. Although muscle strength improved in both groups regardless of SOC level, this was not the case for the timed up-and-go (TUG) test, where those with weaker baseline SOC did not improve TUG scores following the intervention. This remained the case when adherence was accounted for.
