Patellar denervation does not reduce post-operative anterior knee pain after primary total knee arthroplasty with patellar resurfacing

Two hundred and two patients who underwent a total knee arthroplasty with patellar resurfacing were randomized to undergo patellar denervation (n=101) or no denervation (n=101). Outcomes of interest were anterior knee pain and function as measured by the pressure pain threshold, visual analogue scale (VAS), patellofemoral Feller score and the Knee Society Score (KSS). The non-denervation group had slightly improved patellar pain threshold and lower VAS scores with stairs. No other differences were noted between the groups. When examining differences from the baseline, the denervation group had larger reductions in VAS scores with walking and stairs.
