A comparative study of early functional outcomes in undisplaced neck of femur fracture treated with partially threaded and fully threaded cannulated screw fixation in patients above 60 years age.

Eighty-two patients aged 60 or older with undisplaced neck of femur fractures were randomized to receive either partially threaded cannulated screw fixation (n=41) or fully threaded cannulated screw fixation (n=41). The primary outcome was early functional outcome assessed by the Harris Hip Score. Secondary outcomes included radiological union assessed by RUSH score at 6 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months. Overall, the results of the study revealed no significant differences in outcomes at 6 weeks or 3 months, but at 6 months, the fully threaded screw group showed significantly better functional and radiographic outcomes. These findings suggest that fully threaded cannulated screws may offer superior early outcomes in elderly patients with undisplaced femoral neck fractures.
