2018 OTA Annual Meeting: Treatment of Proximal Humeral Fractures With Internal Fixation and Antiosteoporotic Drugs in Elderly Patients

98 patients with a proximal humerus fracture and managed with internal fixation were randomized to postoperative treatment with salmon calcitonin, alfacalcidol, and calcium supplementation or no additional postoperative treatment. Patients were assessed over the first 12 months after surgery for time to union, shoulder function and incidence of complications. Results demonstrated significant differences in favour of the supplementation group for all three outcome measures.
