Inpatient Compliance with Venous Thromboembolism Prophylaxis in Orthopaedic Trauma: A Pragmatic Randomized Controlled Trial of Aspirin Versus Low Molecular Weight Heparin
329 patients undergoing operative fixation of an extremity fracture were included in this trial to compare venous thromboembolism prophylaxis compliance between aspirin and enoxaparin. There was no difference in the percentage of patients that missed a dose (Asprin 41.2% and Enoxaparin 43.3%, p=0.7). Reasons for missed doses and refusal rates were simial between groups, with the exception of the inability to administer aspirin externally. Patients with upper extremity injuries were more likely to miss doses.
