Cast Immobilization With and Without Immobilization of the Thumb for Nondisplaced Scaphoid Waist Fractures: A Multicenter Randomized Controlled Trial
55 patients with nondisplaced fractures of the scaphoid waist were randomized to receive a below-elbow cast including the thumb or a below-elbow cast excluding the thumb. There were no differences in clinical outcomes or rate of fracture union at 6 months. The results indicate that nondisplaced fractures of the scaphoid waist can be adequately treated with a below-elbow cast excluding the thumb.
