Medial Malleolus: Operative or Non-operative (MOON) Trial - A Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial of Operative Versus Non-operative Management of Associated Medial Malleolar Fractures in Unstable Ankle Fractures
154 patients with well-reduced medial malleolar fractures after fibular stabilization of an unstable ankle fracture were randomized to receive non-operative fixation (n=76) or operative fixation (n=78). The primary outcome of interest was the Olerud Molander Ankle Score at 1 year post-randomization. Secondary outcomes of interest included the Manchester-Oxford Foot Questionnaire and the EuroQol-5 Dimensions-3 Levels quality of life measure. Results revealed significant improvements in ankle function in both groups, with no differences in all outcomes between non-operative and operative fixation.
