2022 OTA Annual Meeting : The Long-Term Effect of Intraoperative Hip Fracture Injections (HiFI) on Function and Patient Reported Outcomes: A Randomized Controlled Trial

202 patients with hip fractures undergoing fracture fixation surgery were randomized to receive a multimodal pain injection to the fracture hematoma and operative site (n=82) or a no-injection control group (n=120). The primary outcomes of interest were inpatient pain levels, American Pain Society Patient Outcome Questionnaire (APS-POQ), ambulation distance, and length of stay. Secondary outcomes of interest included outpatient APS-POQ scores and the Short Musculoskeletal Function Assessment (SMFA) scores at 6 weeks post-surgery. The results of this study found that patients in the hip injection group reported significantly less inpatient and outpatient pain and function, better quality sleep, and higher levels of satisfaction compared to the control group.
