OE Journal. 2019;7(21):25Urinary catheters in immobilized patients can help to prevent urinary retention, but also increase the risk of infection. It is unclear whether they should be routinely used in the pre-operative period. This study randomized 105 patients with pertrochanteric fractures to urinary catheter retention for 48 hours versus removal pre-operatively. Overall, pre-operative urinary catheter prevented peri-operative urinary retention, but increased the rate of asymptomatic pyuria. However, there was no difference in the rate of urinary tract infection.
