Intravenous Ibuprofen Reduces Opioid Consumption in Acute Pain Management for Orthopaedic Trauma Patients

Ninety-nine orthopaedic trauma patients were randomized to received either IV Ibuprofen (Caldolor) or placebo every 6 hours for 48 hours within admission. Outcomes included pain on the Numeric Rating Scale, opioid consumption, time to first narcotic administration. Interestingly, though IV Ibuprofen did not significantly affect pain scores, it did significantly reduce opioid consumption and tIme to first narcotic was significantly longer in the IV ibuprofen group compared to placebo.
