2019 OTA Annual Meeting: Knee Fix or Replace Trial (KFORT): A Randomized Controlled Feasibility Study

OE Journal. 2019;7(21):423 patients across 7 centers were recruited to a feasibility study investigating the differences between internal fracture fixation (IFF) and distal femoral replacement (DFR) and the viability of a full scale randomized trial. Outcomes of interest included the EuroQol-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D) questionnaire at 6 months post-injury (primary), in-patient costs and estimates of standard deviation to inform sample size calculations. Results revealed favourable EQ-5D scores and lower in-patient costs in the IFF group compared to the DFR group. Sample size calculations determined a minimum 1400 patients required for a full-scale, adequately powered randomized trial.
