2016 OTA Annual Meeting: Tranexamic acid safely reduced blood loss in hip arthroplasty for acute femoral neck fracture

138 patients with a femoral neck fracture scheduled for total hip arthroplasty were randomized to be managed with either tranexamic acid or placebo. Calculated total blood loss, transfusion requirement, and adverse events/complications were assessed. The tranexamic acid group demonstrated a statistically significant 305mL reduction in total blood loss compared to the placebo group, though no significant difference was noted in the incidence of transfusion between groups.
